Tennessee offers an antique plate. Antique plates are used for participation in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades and similar uses as a collector's item, but in no event used for general transportation. For example, to display a 1965 plate on a 1965 Mustang, the owner must register the vehicle with an antique plate which will not allow for general transportation.
Owners of antique motor vehicles may display the license plate from an era when the manufacturer of such vehicle occurred; provided the current antique license plates are maintained in the vehicle by the owner. Older license plates may not be displayed on antique vehicles used for general transportation registered with regular passenger plates. An "antique motor vehicle" is a motor vehicle over 25 years old and a non-modified engine and body. Antique plates are used for participation in club activities, exhibits, tours, parades and similar uses as a collector's item, but in no event used for general transportation. Tennessee does not issue plates in pairs. Plates can not be altered in any way.
