  Sample license plates are available for $5.00 each by submitting a written request.  One sample plate per school or class can be mailed to students at no charge if they indicate that it will be used for a school project.

• SAMPLE LICENSE PLATE INFORMATION:
  At this time the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles does not sell sample vehicle plates of any kind.

• YEAR OF MANUFACTURE LICENSE PLATE USE - Registration Allowed
  VEHICLE QUALIFYING AGE: 26 years or older
  VEHICLE TYPES QUALIFYING FOR YOM:  Passenger, truck, motorcycle.
  
  
  A historical vehicle is a vehicle that is more than 25 years old (a 1980 model vehicle qualifies for historical registration in 2006).
  Some vehicles that are less than 25 years old and have unique characteristics can qualify for a historical registration. The DMV determines if the vehicle has historical, classic or exhibit value.
  
  
  A vintage vehicle is a historical vehicle and receives a historical registration. The registrant of a vintage vehicle can put vintage plates on the vehicle. Vintage plates are authentic New York vehicle plates that were issued during the model year of the vehicle.
  
  
  MUST TYPES MATCH: Type must match on motorcycle only, but other types (passenger, truck, etc) are not required to match

  The DMV cannot issue a registration for vehicle plates that are copies or that are painted again. Vintage plates issued in the model year of 1972 and earlier must display the embossed year or have the original metal tab for that year. Make sure that the tab is attached and legible. A sticker that indicates the model year is not required to use the vintage plates. Vintage plates issued in the model year of 1973 and later do not have metal tabs or plate stickers.

Since it is not registered to the vehicle, it does not matter what type of plate (Auto, Truck etc.). A restored plate may be used. North Carolina only issues one plate for the back of the vehicle.
  
  
  General Statute 20-63(d) states that any motor vehicle of the age of 35 years or more from the date of manufacture may bear the license plates of the year of manufacture instead of the current registration plates, if the current registration plates are maintained within the vehicle and produced upon request of any person.
